Interview with Underoath

Interview with Chris Dudley pianist of Underoath

Q: Was it fun bringing a camera along with you backstage and on tour to film “777” the DVD?

A: Well funny thing is Tim (Guitarist) and I just had a camera that we were messing around with my camera and our manager called us and asked us if he could use the footage for a new live DVD, and of course we said yes. But filming the live stuff was fun, it kind of gives you an extra adrenaline when the crowd is going insane and you know you’re on film.

Q: Are you guys surprised about the growing reputation the band has received since the release of “The Changing Of Times” in 2002?

A: Yeah its weird you know, like over the past few years things have obviously been a lot different than they were as far as tours we were on, and sales, and all that stuff. You know we are really thankful for all of that, but its just weird because we never saw ourselves as that band, you know? Like this kid came up to me today and was like “man I saw you guys on the Warped Tour when I was 12” and it really hit me then cause this kid was now like 16 or 17 and I just thought “oh my gosh we have been touring for a long time, we’ve been here for a long time” and he was telling us about how we are an influence to his band and I was just like “man that’s what I said to bands back in the day” and I never saw us being that band that kids looked up to, its just awesome and we are really thankful for that.

Q: You guys are obviously one of the biggest Christian bands on the tour, how much does you guy’s faith play into your music and stage presence?

A: Well we’ve always said that our faith doesn’t like…it’s not a thing where we find ways to put our faith into the things we do. The only reason why we do the things we do it because of the of what we believe in, and in that, you know, everything you are called to do as a Christian you are supposed to be a light to others, and to be doing it unto the Lord. So in that way, whenever we are writing and whenever we are on stage, that is why we are on stage. It’s that so much of what we do involve God, its what we do is for God.

Q: What drove you guys to write “Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape?”

A: Well when we got towards the end of doing “They’re Only Chasing Safety” we realized there was a chance, like all of our lyrics are written from a Christian perspective, but we didn’t want there to ever be a chance of someone listening to the record and not getting the fact that we are a Christian band and not getting the fact that everything we write about is from our faith. Even though its what we do a lot of our lyrics are really open ended, and that’s just the way that we are, and we were like “dude we want to right a song that is blatant” so we wrote that song to show what we believe. It’s a praise song obviously, and a song that was just done unto God more than any of the other ones, because the lyrics are pretty blatant. And that was pretty much blatant, and there have been a lot of people that have come up to us and said that they got a lot out of that song, which is really really cool and encouraging.

Interview with Anberlin

Interview with Stephen Christian lead singer of Anberlin

Q: What causes has Anberlin supported on the Warped tour?

A: Well you know we have been supporting To Write Love On Her Arms for a while now, almost a year, and we took them along with us on our headlining tour, but we just recently started to support Invisible Children and have started to open our eyes to the conflict in Africa, especially around Uganda. We are planning on setting up a benefit concert for I.C. sometime soon, so other than that To Write Love has been our main focus on the tour.

Q: What got you guys interested in To Write Love On Her Arms? Was it a personal experience or just something that happened?

A: Well we’ve been working with causes now for sometime, whether it is with World Vision or something, but To Write Love is just something we’ve really been interested in. I have my own organization that in January went to Calcutta, India to work against human trafficking, and I brought Jamie along (founder of To Write Love On Her Arms) and we were all talking and I just said “man why don’t you just come on tour with us and talk before each show and sell some merch?” and that started it all. And we feel its just a cause that we are called to and its really worth it.

Q: Were there any challenges in writing “Cities” like going on the softer side with “Inevitable” and “The Unwinding Cable Car?”

A: Well we just wanted to expand and say “all music is fair game.” You know we aren’t going to be scared of a ballad, or scared of a slow song, or scared of using strings, it was just really experimentation. We tried to work with different tones, we used different effects and mixers. London Bridge, where we recorded some, really did an amazing job with it all. Just knowing they’ve recorded the likes of Pearl Jam and all of those great bands really set the bar high for us. We had no idea what to expect going into it but it all turned out a lot better than we all thought.

Q: You guys like to cover 80’s songs like “Love Song” and “The Promise” what drove Anberlin to do that? And are there any more in store?

A: Well its just really a love for the music of that time, and its just some of the most innocent and fun music, you know we all grew up then so we just wanted to show appreciation to all those bands by attempting their songs. And we also did it because Anberlin can’t really cover a rap song or a country song, and any other genre would sound bad, you know you don’t want Anberlin singing “Free Bird” or anything like that. And who knows there might be more in store, we are thinking about it, but fans will just have to wait and see.

Interview with Sullivan

This is my interview with Brooks Paschal the lead singer for the up and coming Tooth and Nail band Sullivan.

Q: Was Sullivan the first band you first started playing with, or were there other bands that started your music career?

A: Oh yeah, many others, but Sullivan was the first thing that was completely mine, as in I wrote everything, and it was the first band that I sang in.

Q: Were there any challenges writing the new record?

A: actually no, that’s what made it good I think, it was very natural. I guess the only thing that was unexpected and potentially dangerous was that we actually had to go in he studio a month and a half sooner than we had planned, but everything went so smooth.

Q: Are you surprised by the recent success of Sullivan, from its "two members and a drum machine-era" long ago?

A: Of course, I never thought it would go this far, and the truth is we spent 2 years just kind of doing this for fun, and then there was this moment where we saw a chance to go big with it, so we did.

Q: How did Tooth and Nail find out about Sullivan and then go on to sign you guys?

A: We sent demos, very old fashion, we happen to be playing a show where the guys from He Is Legend were hanging out, Chad was talking to one of them about us and they were like "these dudes are rad," and that sealed the deal!

Q: Can you see Sullivan possibly on The Vans Warped Tour in a year or two, or doing a world tour?

A: Oh yeah, the record is getting released in Japan so we are heading there soon. I’m not sure why we haven’t done warped yet. I think our schedule just never matches

End: That’s awesome, cant wait to hear from you guys overseas. Thanks Brooks!
